Faculty Development

Traditional Track

Eligibility in this track requires “excellence in research and teaching”. Listed below are examples of the types of activities that could qualify a faculty member for promotion. These guidelines should not be considered an inclusive catalog, or a checklist that will ensure promotion.

Associate Professor on term

Recognition as independent investigator

Publications

• Consistent, ongoing record of high quality original papers in leading journals in the field
• Publications should be hypothesis testing or epidemiologic in nature as opposed to experiential or descriptive
• Must have a substantive role in the papers (if not first or last author, role should be documented in annotated bibliography).
• Productivity should be of the order of 3-6 papers a year and consistent with the expectation of funding agencies
• The quality and the impact factor of the journals and the impact of the papers within a well defined area of investigation will be considered.
• There should be a discernable focus of investigation, clear evidence of independence as an investigator and a clearly defined theme.

Funding

• Should be PI on grants from national organizations. Generally, one or two NIH R01 or equivalent grants are required.
• There should be significant salary support on the grants. The proportion of salary that is grant supported may vary from section to section and will be determined by the section chief and chair.
• Grant funding should support the lab supplies, technical help, data gathering and other costs of the research.
• Funding should extend through the first 2 years of the proposed appointment

Evidence of national recognition

• Invited presentations at regional or national meetings
• Editorial board of journals
• Officer/member of council of subspecialty organization
• Permanent or ad hoc member of NIH study section or other national review panel (e.g. VA, MOD, AHA)

Demonstrated excellence as teacher

Respected as a teacher - as evidenced by evaluations from:

• medical students
• housestaff and fellows
• peers (faculty to obtain evaluations from lectures, courses, seminars)

• Active and willing participant in teaching activities of Department
• Supervised and mentored theses and research of medical students, residents and fellows
• A record of training and mentoring post-doctoral fellows who have achieved academic success.

Achievements and promise as teachers and scholars should be strong enough to suggest that they will be qualified for appointment to tenure within 4 to 5 years.

Time limitations
The initial appointment as Associate Professor on this track is for a maximum of 5 years. No one may be appointed at the combined ranks of Assistant and Associate Professor on term for longer than 10 years. This includes full time teaching at other institutions - which counts for a maximum of 3 years. (Exceptions may be made for leaves of absence for public service, child rearing, or medical disability, or part time appointments).

Tenure
This decision, which is a permanent commitment, is based on past scholarly achievement , future potential of the faculty member, and the needs of the Department and School.

Associate Professor with tenure

• Candidates must have produced a significant body of scholarship, must be able teachers and, if clinicians, must be accomplished in their clinical fields.
• They must be rising toward national and international leadership in their fields.
• There must be clear evidence that academic growth will continue, with the expectation that their value to the institution and their national and international standing will make them suitable candidates for promotion to Professor within a reasonable period of time.
• A primary requirement is evidence of a widely recognized and significant impact on a well defined area of investigation.

As is required for Associate Professor on term, there must be evidence that research publications and productivity, research funding, and scientific recognition will continue through the appointment as Associate Professor with tenure. Criteria for this will include: First or senior authored publications in outstanding research journals; continued funding from national research organizations; invited presentations at national or international meetings; national leadership positions in the area of scholarship (e.g. service on study sections of national research organizations; member of editorial board of journals; officer or member of council of subspecialty organizations).

Professor with tenure

• Candidates are expected to stand in competition with the foremost leaders in their fields throughout the world as demonstrated by major scholarly achievements and by teaching.
• If they are clinicians they must be outstanding practitioners of their field.
• There should be ample evidence that they will continue to make significant contributions as scholars, to serve as able and influential teachers and to contribute to the well being of the community.

Scholarship

Publications

• Sustained record of outstanding original papers in major journals
• Identifiable papers that have substantially advanced the field
• Acknowledged as leader of research team
• The quality and the impact factor of the papers will be considered
• Publication of chapters in highly regarded textbooks

Funding

• Should have record of sustained grant funding from national organizations
• There should be significant salary support on the grants. The proportion of salary that is grant supported may vary from
• Section to section and will be determined by the section chief and chair.
• Grant funding should support the lab supplies, technical help, data gathering and other costs of the research
• Funding should extend through the first 2 years of the proposed appointment.

Evidence of national and international recognition

• Invited presentations at national or international meetings
• Editorial board of journals
• Member of national specialty board
• Officer/member of council of subspecialty organization
• Permanent or ad hoc member of NIH study section or other national review panel (e.g. VA, MOD, AHA)

Teaching
Respected as exemplary teacher - as evidenced by evaluations from:

• medical students
• housestaff and fellows
• peers

Active and willing participant in teaching activities of Department. Record of attracting and training academically successful postdoctoral fellows and/or junior faculty

• awards to trainees
• sponsor of trainee research grants
• publications by trainees
• director of training grant
